CIVIL RIGHTS SUIT ALLEGES ANTI-MEXICAN FRESNO – A suit filed in Superior Court in Fresno on Tuesday charges that Mexican-American legal workers in the Fresno office of the Adelson, Testan, Brundo & Popalardo law firm were subjected to "intolerable" discrimination and harassment. Elizabeth Murillo Hook, a legal secretary who was employed by the firm, said employees were subjected to anti-Mexican epithets and that she was physically assaulted on more than one occasion while at work. The complaint asks the court to order the Adelson firm "to implement a cultural sensitivity program – to include appreciation of Mexican-American culture." Mrs. Hook's attorney, Tony Bothwell of San Francisco, said that, because of "the outrageous conduct of the employer," the case warrants compensatory and punitive damages in excess of $1 million. "We should not have to be dealing with the violation of basic human rights in the United States in this day and age," he said. "It is wrong that my client has been denied freedom here at home while her husband, in the service of our county, fights for freedom in Afghanistan."
